The origin of the candy is remarkably obscure, but popular accounts indicate Atlantic towns, New Jersey, in the 1880s. One story goes that a tide swept into a confectionery shop owned by Joseph Fralinger, making his sugar sticky. Trying to recover his inventory, Fralinger supposedly yelled for aid, and a local worker responded, stretching the warm
